Basic Structure
The Prefects' Board consists of the Head Prefect, 6 Senior Prefects, 18 School
Prefects as well as 2 Class Prefects from each class. It is an individual sector of
the Students' Union, i.e. meetings, decisions and duties carried out by the
Prefects' Board alone. The Board is led by the Head Prefect in cooperation with the
Discipline Master and discipline teachers.
- The Head Prefect is an official member of the Students' Union, selected during
the formation of the Students' Union Executive Committee.
- 6 Senior Prefects are Form 6 students chosen by the Head Prefect to assist him
in maintaining discipline inside and outside the school.
- 18 School Prefects are selected by the Head Prefect among Form 3 and 4 students.
They will mainly be in charge of discipline within the school.
- 2 Class Prefects will be selected from each class. The Discipline Board will
choose these students on or before the second week of September. They are mainly in
charge of discipline inside classrooms and laboratories.
Duties of Prefects
All Prefects are in charge of maintaining discipline. Different Prefects have
different roles and authority. Actions carried out by Prefects MUST be just, fair,
reasonable and comply with the Statement of Prefects' Authority. Prefects must not
be rude, and should approach students who have offended school rules in a friendly
way. If certain students disrespect any Prefect, this should be recorded down or
reported to the Head Prefect. The Head Prefect will handle these situations, but if
the seriousness of offence exceeds a certain limit, the Discipline Master will be
informed.
Prefects MUST wear their badges at all times. The badge is a sign of authority
which every Prefect should keep in good condition. If any Prefect loses his badge,
he must report to the Discipline Master.
Prefects are to be role models for other students to follow. The Guidelines of
School Discipline gives detailed information of every student's proper manner and
appearance. Prefects themselves must abide these rules and regulations, otherwise
they will also risk punishment. When daily duties are assigned, Prefects must carry
out their jobs. If a Prefect can't be present on certain occasions, he should inform
the Head Prefect so that replacement can be made as soon as possible.
Division of Labour
Senior Prefects and School Prefects will be divided in 5 groups, each consisting
10-11 prefects, i.e. 2 Senior Prefects and 8-9 School Prefects. Each group will be
on-duty once to twice a week. The routine will be set by the Head Prefect.
Duties include arriving at school at 7:40 a.m. and standing at the school
entrance for inspection of uniform. Prefects shall also be in the canteen during
lunchtime and recess to maintain discipline and prevent students from cutting in
queues. The Head Prefect should be on duty every day and patrol around the school
campus including the playgrounds and classrooms. However, ALL prefects should keep
watch of disciplinary problems every day. They may report to the on-duty prefects to
take appropriate actions. When called upon by the Head Prefect, all prefects
must put disciplinary affairs as their first priority regardless of having duties of
other clubs in hand.
The Duty of Students
All students MUST obey school rules, teachers, and prefects, whenever:
- They are at school.
- They are in school uniform or representing St. Joseph's College.
- They are participating in school functions.
